INTRODUCTION

Since its establishment in August 2000, Tani International Legal Consulting has supported corporate clients, chiefly foreign-affiliated companies, with immigration procedures (visa applications) relating to the residence and employment of foreign nationals, as well as various other administrative procedures.

More than 25 years on, the environment surrounding the employment of foreign nationals in Japan has reached a major turning point.

Against the backdrop of a declining birth rate, an aging population and labor shortages, hiring foreign talent is becoming ever more important for Japanese companies. At the same time, the immigration control system has seen a series of legal amendments and changes in examination practice in recent years, in response to social and economic conditions and the realities of foreign employment.

The points a company must check in order to employ foreign nationals lawfully, such as the examination criteria and required documents for each status of residence, the scope of work a foreign national may engage in, and the treatment of work under dispatch arrangements, are more complex and wide-ranging than ever.

In this environment, it is by no means easy for a company to keep up with the latest rules and practice, determine the appropriate status of residence for each foreign employee, complete the necessary procedures on time, and also manage day-to-day residence matters properly.

Moreover, now that corporate compliance and social responsibility carry more weight than ever, confirming status of residence and managing employment properly are not merely matters of administrative procedure; they are part of corporate risk management itself.

If there is a problem with the hiring decision, the choice of status of residence, the actual job duties, or the form of employment or dispatch, the consequences may go beyond a denied application or difficulties with renewal and, in some cases, lead to issues of illegal employment.

We do not believe that the role of a specialist is simply to prepare application documents and file them with the immigration authorities.

Drawing on the practical experience and expertise we have built up since 2000, and on the latest developments in constantly changing immigration administration, we see our role as providing continuous support to both companies and their foreign employees: from the hiring stage through the choice of status of residence, application procedures, renewals, job changes and transfers, residence of family members, and applications for permanent residence.

By entrusting complex immigration procedures and residence management to specialists with confidence, we hope our clients can concentrate on their core business and on making the most of their people.

As specialists in foreign employment and immigration practice, Tani International Legal Consulting will continue to provide services that are accurate, prompt, and attentive to each individual client.
