"Specified Skilled Worker" is a status of residence for accepting foreign nationals with a certain level of skill and Japanese language ability in industrial fields facing serious labor shortages. It covers 19 fields; linen supply, logistics warehousing and resource recycling were added in January 2026.

What is required of the accepting company
- Paying remuneration equal to or higher than that of Japanese nationals
- Preparing and implementing a support plan for daily life and work for (i) holders (this may be entrusted to a Registered Support Organization)
- Filing the various notifications with the Immigration Services Bureau
Relationship with the Employment for Skill Development system
The "Employment for Skill Development" (ikusei shuro) system, which replaces the Technical Intern Training Program, is scheduled to start on April 1, 2027. It is designed to develop workers to the level of Specified Skilled Worker (i) over three years, on the premise of a transition to Specified Skilled Worker status.
