Re-entry Permit

A re-entry permit is permission that a foreign resident of Japan obtains before leaving the country temporarily, so that he or she can re-enter with the same status of residence. If you leave without it, your status of residence is extinguished and you must start again from the visa application.
Special re-entry permit
A person who holds a valid passport and Residence Card and will re-enter Japan within one year of departure does not, in principle, need to obtain a re-entry permit. This is called the "special re-entry permit" (minashi sainyukoku).
- You indicate your intention at the airport when you depart.
- If your period of stay expires within one year, you must re-enter by that expiry date.
- The period cannot be extended from overseas.

When a re-entry permit is required
If you plan to be away from Japan for more than one year, please obtain a re-entry permit before departure. Permits are either single or multiple. The maximum validity is five years, within your period of stay.

If you are unsure which procedure applies, for example for an overseas assignment or a long business trip, please consult us.
