Activities Outside Status of Residence

Map of Asia
Permission to Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted allows you to engage, on an occasional or side-job basis, in paid activities beyond those permitted under your current status. You must obtain the permission before starting the activity.
Examples where permission is required
- A "Student" who takes a part-time job
- A "Dependent" who works part-time
- A person with a work status who takes on a side job outside the scope of that status

Working hours
Part-time work permitted for students and dependents is, in principle, limited to 28 hours per week. Students may work up to 8 hours per day only during their school's long vacation periods. Work connected with adult entertainment businesses is not permitted.

Who does not need permission
Holders of "Permanent Resident", "Spouse or Child of Japanese National", "Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident" and "Long-Term Resident" status have no restrictions on their activities and do not need this permission.

Working without permission, or beyond the permitted hours, can affect the renewal or change of your status of residence, and the employer may also be held liable.
