An Application for Permission to Acquire Status of Residence is the procedure by which a foreign national who has come to reside in Japan without going through landing procedures obtains a status of residence. It applies to children of foreign nationality born in Japan and to persons who have renounced or lost Japanese nationality.
Time limits
- For 60 days from the date of birth, renunciation of nationality or similar event, the person may stay in Japan without a status of residence.
- If the person will stay beyond 60 days, the application must be filed within 30 days of that date.

When a child is born
1. Submit the notification of birth to the municipal office within 14 days of the birth.
2. File the Application for Permission to Acquire Status of Residence with the Regional Immigration Services Bureau within 30 days of the birth.
3. In parallel, proceed with the passport application at the embassy or consulate of the child's country of nationality.

The time limits for this procedure are short. Please consult us early, as soon as you know the expected date of birth.
