Intra-company Transferee Visa
Intra-company Transferee is the status of residence for employees transferred, for a fixed period, from an overseas head office, branch, subsidiary or affiliate to an office in Japan. Many people posted to Japan through the internal transfers of global companies use this status.
Main requirements
- A transfer: a move between the head office and branches of the same company, or between parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies
- Overseas service: at least one year of continuous work at the overseas office immediately before the transfer
- Work: both the overseas work and the work in Japan must be professional work falling under Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services (engineering, planning, sales, accounting, marketing, interpreting and translation, etc.)
- Pay: at least equal to that of a Japanese national doing the same work
Differences from Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services
The period of stay is 5 years, 3 years, 1 year or 3 months, decided based on the planned length of the transfer and other factors. If you switch to local employment in Japan or change jobs, you need to change to another status such as Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services.
New Intra-company Transferee (ii)
Together with the start of the Employment for Skill Development system, which replaces the Technical Intern Training Program, a new Intra-company Transferee (ii) is planned for employees of overseas offices who acquire skills in Japan while receiving training. The existing status will become (i).
