When to apply
- You can apply from roughly three months before the expiry date.
Points to note
- Staying past the expiry date constitutes an illegal overstay. Please manage your deadline carefully.
- If you have changed jobs, or if your income or tax payment situation has changed, these points will be examined in detail at renewal.
- If you apply by the deadline, you may continue to stay in Japan even if the period expires during the examination, until the date of the decision or two months after the expiry date, whichever comes first.
Our office files extension applications on your behalf and helps you keep track of deadlines. Online applications are also available.
Extension of Period of Stay

An Application for Extension of Period of Stay is the procedure for extending your period of stay while keeping your current status of residence. It is commonly called a "visa renewal".
The period of stay is decided together with the status of residence at the time of landing or of a change of status. A foreign national may stay in Japan within that period. If you wish to continue staying beyond it, you must apply for an extension and obtain permission by the date the period expires.
